The history

In the heart of Cagliari, along the historic Via dei Genovesi, stands Palazzo de Candia, a place that tells centuries of life and passion. A palace that, with its four floors, welcomes anyone who wants to immerse themselves in a unique atmosphere, with frescoed halls and secret corners that hold stories of nobility and culture.

The main facade, in neoclassical style, is often attributed to the architect Gaetano Cima, but some theories suggest that the design may have been created by the engineer Carlo de Candia, whose training coincided with Cima’s. In Cima’s detailed records, there is no trace of the design for the palace’s facade, an element that supports the idea that engineer Carlo de Candia may have been the true author of the facade.

The palace is a treasure trove of history: within its walls lived important figures such as Donna Caterina Grixoni, widow de Candia, the last heir of the family, who in 1898 sold the building to the renowned lawyer Francesco Muntoni. His grandchildren, well-known professionals from Cagliari, lived in the palace until the 1950s. Later, the palace was leased to a religious order.

In 1968, Benedetta Imeroni Inserra purchased the palace, which became her home and that of her family, a refuge where history intertwined with daily life. However, one of the most fascinating chapters of its history relates to the purchase and renovation of the palace in 1846 by a great exiled tenor: Mario De Candia. From Paris, the tenor sent his brother the funds for the purchase and instructions for the deed of sale, overseeing every detail. Although he never lived in the palace, he continued to send furniture, books, and precious items from all over Europe, creating a home he would never inhabit, but one that told the story of his art and spirit.

The elegant rooms of the palace, with their timeless charm. Every corner invites discovery: the Landrone, the nineteenth-century fountain, and the frescoed rooms are just some of the hidden treasures in this place. And that’s not all. The panoramic view from the palace is breathtaking: a privileged corner from which to admire the Golfo degli Angeli, a panorama that makes every moment even more special, adding a touch of magic and uniqueness.
